drawn is approximately 80 mm high. The apparatus was designed following
earlier versions built by Professor C.J. Spiers and co-workers of Utrecht
University (Netherland). Capillary tubes are filled with sodium chlorate grains and first compacted dry before saturated solution is added by filling from above (inlet) and sucking from below (outlet). Inlet and outlet are sealed. Samples are loaded with dead weights of the order of 100 to 500 g corresponding to axial stresses in the range of 1 to 5 MPa. Position of the piston is continuously monitored during the experiment, either manually with a micrometer or electronically with an LVDT. |
