Centre and right: natural examples in quartz.
The aim of this DFG project is to study shear zone development in an
elastic-brittle rock analogue material (sodium chlorate) in situ under the
microscope. Experiments are carried out at room temperature in the
presence of water. Under these conditions sodium chlorate deforms by a
combination of water-assisted stress corrosion cracking (cataclasis) and
solution mass transfer.
